Social emotional learning is a term used to describe a person’s ability to manage their own emotions and appropriately respond to the emotions of others. Core social-emotional abilities include self-awareness, self-management, perseverance, and social skills. Social emotional elementary curriculum helps students to develop these skills. Through direct instruction and opportunities for practice, Mind Missions lessons encourage critical social-emotional growth in the following areas.
Self-awareness: Self-awareness is the ability to notice your own feelings, reactions, habits, behaviors, and thoughts. Self-awareness empowers students and allows them to pursue self-management skills. Every Mind Missions lesson includes time to reflect on personal habits, behaviors, and teamwork for greater self-awareness.
Self-management: Self-management skills allow children to develop the ability to control their behavior and moods. Students learn to control outbursts and resolve conflict effectively. Self-management skills also empower students with the abilities of setting and working toward goals. Mind Missions lessons offer practice in collaboration and team problem-solving, providing opportunities for self-management growth. Students learn to work together to gain consensus, manage time, and complete projects.
Perseverance: Perseverance allows children to meet goals despite difficulties. Mind Missions lessons offer opportunities to face challenges, acknowledge failure, and persevere for mission completion. Students learn from their mistakes and develop grit with Mind Missions learning experiences.
Social skills: Children need to find common ground with others, work effectively with others, and participate fully with a team. Mind Missions lessons promote effective communication and collaborative skills as students work in teams on creative problem-solving challenges.
Social Emotional Growth is the process through which children acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve goals, maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. These skills are essential inside and outside of the classroom. They prepare students for learning and life! Social emotional elementary curriculum supports the development of these essential skills for a lifetime of success.
